Which rules apply on which side of the border?

Gas Safe registration applies across the UK, and the same testing and purging standards apply in England and Scotland. The differences are in the surrounding paperwork.

In Berwick and Northumberland, Northumberland County Council is the planning and highway authority. A street works permit or a section 50 licence is normally required before excavating in a public road or footway. The A1 is managed by National Highways.

Across the border in Eyemouth, Coldstream and Duns, Scottish Borders Council is the roads authority, road works go through the Scottish Road Works Register, and many alterations to a commercial building need a building warrant.

The gas network is Northern Gas Networks on the English side and SGN on the Scottish side. Each owns the service pipe up to the emergency control valve. New connections and supply upgrades go through the relevant network or your supplier. Our work starts after the meter on either side.

Hotels, restaurants and pubs

The walled town, the quayside and the roads towards Tweedmouth have hotels, guest houses, restaurants and pubs serving visitors to the coast and the Borders. Many are listed buildings with long pipe runs and awkward flue routes. Kitchen fit-outs, appliance changes and annual commercial gas certificates go through our commercial catering service.

The port and the estates at Tweedmouth

The dock, the fish processors and the units on the Ramparts and Tweedside estates use gas for workshop heating, drying and process equipment. Alterations are tested and purged during planned stops, and units that change hands are surveyed and tested before the new occupier moves in.

Holiday parks and coastal leisure

Parks at Spittal, Scremerston and along the coast towards Seahouses have clubhouses, shops and shower blocks on commercial supplies, often fed by buried pipework across the site. Pre-season testing and end-of-season isolation are the usual pattern.

Hospital, schools and public buildings

The infirmary, the schools, the leisure centre and care homes in Berwick run boiler plant serviced on a planned cycle, with work phased to keep heating and hot water on.

Farms and rural businesses

Agricultural merchants, farm shops, estate offices and rural workshops across north Northumberland are often on LPG where mains gas does not reach. The testing principles are the same, and our engineers work on both.

Elizabethan walls and listed buildings

Almost the whole of the old town lies within the walls and the conservation area, and a very high proportion of its buildings are listed. External pipework, flues and meter boxes usually need listed building consent from the county council's planning service. It is best raised at the design stage, before pipe routes are fixed.

Salt air and the coast

Corrosion of external steel pipework, brackets and meter housings is the most common cause of a failed tightness test on the coast. We inspect external pipework on every visit, replace corroded sections before they fail and specify materials that cope better with salt spray.

Testing, purging and commissioning

Tightness testing proves that pipework does not leak at working pressure. The section is isolated, pressurised, allowed to settle and monitored with a calibrated gauge. It is needed after installation, alteration or repair, after a reported gas escape, before gas is restored to premises that have been closed and as part of an annual inspection. New pipework is strength tested at a higher pressure first.

Gas purging replaces the contents of the pipe. Air is replaced with gas to bring a system into service, and gas is replaced with air or nitrogen to take it out. On larger pipework, nitrogen purging keeps gas and air apart. The purge is vented outdoors to a safe point and checked with a gas detector.

New installations, hot tapping and decommissioning

We design and install commercial gas pipework to IGEM/UP/2 and install and maintain commercial heating systems. Buried routes across yards and parks are planned, laid, tested and recorded as described on our underground gas pipework page. Where a branch is needed from a live pipe and a shutdown is impractical, gas hot tapping may be an option.

When a kitchen or plant room goes electric, redundant pipework is purged, cut back to a live valve, capped and recorded.

Repairs and servicing

Berwick is a long way from the nearest city, which is exactly why a reliable engineer matters. We provide emergency gas repairs for commercial premises, followed by a retest and purge so the supply can be restored. Our team works seven days a week.

An annual service and tightness test is the minimum we recommend. Unusual boiler noises, uneven heating, water around a unit and a sudden rise in gas use are signs to call sooner.
